In 1928, an icon was born. Mickey Mouse – the inspiration of Walt Disney, and animated by Ub Iwerks – first endeared himself to audiences in the short film Plane Crazy. Mickey’s circular body and rubber hose limbs remained largely unchanged for the first ten years of his life. But as animation was progressing in the 1930s, Mickey needed to progress with it.
Disney Legend Fred Moore is the animator primarily responsible for redesigning Mickey and giving the mouse his modern look – popularized in the Fantasia short The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (1940). While Sorcerer Mickey was the biggest early example of Disney’s departure from the classic “pie-eyed” Mickey look, it was actually the second short to feature the redesigned Mickey.
