It’s an age-old question in literature, as well as in cinema: Who is the better character? Is it the hero who overcomes the odds while undergoing a life-changing transformation of character? Or is it the villain who deliciously represents everything we dislike, but somehow drags us into the murky corners of their heart?
The moral distinction between hero and villain is usually crystal clear, but in the world of Disney, the affection fans bestow upon these climactic characters can often be surprisingly different from what we might expect.
Three heavyweight battles ensue on Episode 116 of the Married to a Disney Addict podcast, where I join hosts (and friends) Krystle and Matt Woolley, along with Megan Kirsch. Together, we crown the winners of the hero-villain battle in three mega-popular Disney Renaissance films:
- Beast vs. Gaston from Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin vs. Jafar from Aladdin
- Simba vs. Scar from The Lion King

Who did we pick as the better character from each of these films? You’ll have to listen to find out!
