Since 1959,  the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States has awarded a Grammy for Best Soundtrack for Visual Media (film, television show or series, video game, or other visual media). Several Disney films have won the Grammy award for this category.

This trivia question has two pieces:

What is the first Disney film to win the award for Best Soundtrack for Visual Media?

What is the first Disney animated film to win this award?

And the answers are:

The first Disney film to win a Grammy award for Best Soundtrack was Mary Poppins (1965).

The Disney Legend Sherman Brothers – Richard and Robert – wrote the music and lyrics for the soundtrack, and the music was adapted and conducted by Irwin Kostal.

The first Disney animated film to win a Grammy award for Best Soundtrack is Beauty and the Beast (1992).

Another famous Disney musical team – Alan Menken and Howard Ashman – wrote the music and lyrics for the film.

The complete list of Disney films that have won the Grammy award for Best Soundtrack includes:

  • Mary Poppins – 1965
  • Beauty and the Beast – 1993
  • Aladdin – 1994
  • A Bug’s Life – 2000
  • Ratatouille – 2008
  • Up – 2010
  • Toy Story 3 – 2011

You’ll notice that Pixar has developed quite a knack for penning award-winning soundtracks to their films, with Randy Newman and Michael Giacchino each leading their films to two awards!

While the list above includes Walt Disney Pictures original content, there are several other films that are currently part of the Disney umbrella that have won Grammys, including the following:
